BRUSSELS, Belgium — An independent journalist has published a new consumer guide examining one of the most common questions before laser hair removal: whether people should shave, wax, sugar or epilate before treatment.
Should you shave or wax before laser hair removal?
Many people assume that all forms of hair removal prepare the skin in the same way. In practice, the methods are very different. Shaving removes hair at the surface while leaving the follicle in place. Waxing, sugaring and epilation pull the hair from the follicle, which can interfere with the target needed for laser-based hair reduction.
The guide therefore emphasizes that preparation should be discussed before treatment rather than left until the day of an appointment.
Preparation starts before the appointment
Laser hair reduction relies on pigment associated with the hair and follicular structure. For that reason, removing the hair from the root shortly before treatment can be counterproductive.
Shaving is generally approached differently because it shortens the visible hair without removing it from the follicle.
The guide also notes that preparation is not only about hair-removal method. Recent sun exposure, changes in skin condition, medication and previous reactions may also be relevant and should be discussed with the treatment provider.
Commentary for the guide was provided by Dr. Hisham Adem, Associate Professor at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco, and Founder and Owner of Lumière Skin Düsseldorf.
“A lot of people arrive with very practical questions,” Adem said. “Can I shave? When should I stop waxing? What should I do if I have been in the sun? These may sound like small details, but they are exactly the kind of things that should be clarified before treatment begins.”
The guide argues that clear preparation instructions can make the treatment process easier for both the customer and the provider.
It also highlights the importance of avoiding one-size-fits-all advice. Skin characteristics, hair characteristics, treatment area and individual circumstances can differ significantly from one person to another.
“At the consultation stage, people should feel comfortable asking simple questions,” Adem said. “Good information is not about making the process sound complicated. It is about helping someone know what to do before they arrive.”
At Lumière Skin Düsseldorf, consultation and individual skin and hair assessment form part of the service approach before treatment with Alexandrite 755 nm and Nd 1064 nm laser systems.
The broader message of the guide applies beyond any single provider: preparation is part of the treatment process, and customers should receive clear instructions about what to continue, what to avoid and when to ask for individual advice.
